${reading_time(`Congratulations! All that hard work studying has paid off and you now have an offer for Medicine Admissions Interview. However, you might want to holdback on those celebratory cartwheels, as the final interview boss is waiting for you (cue suspenseful music). Whether you are going down the undergraduateor postgraduate medical school pathway, the interviews are structured similarly. This is because the Medicine Admissions Interview assesses a candidate'ssuitability for a career in Medicine.   Undergraduate pathways into Medicine Interview selection for an Australian undergraduate Medicine program commonly requires a UCAT and ATAR score and is offered to applicants with thehighest combined ranking in these two areas (note: James Cook University and Bond rely on academic performance, only). Entry into these programs is opento anyone and not just secondary students; however, this comes with a catch. For applicants who are studying or have completed a tertiary degree, they willbe assessed for admission to Medicine on their tertiary study results and ATAR score. For example, non-rural entry into the UNSW undergraduate Medicineprogram for 2022 required an ATAR of at least 96 and a WAM of 70. Most undergraduate medical schools have similar cut-offs and due to the highlycompetitive nature of entry requirements, this means that if you were unlikely to enter undergraduate Medicine straight out of high school, you are alsounlikely to do so following tertiary studies. Therefore, almost all tertiary students go down the GAMSAT path for postgraduate Medicine entry.   Postgraduate pathways into Medicine Interview selection for an Australian postgraduate Medicine program requires a GAMSAT result and GPA score from their undergraduate degree. Someschools like the Universities of Notre Dame Sydney/Fremantle and Wollongong require a Casper Situational Judgement Test score. The University ofWollongong additionally requires a portfolio of personal and community experience, whilst Macquarie University and Sydney University Dubbo Medicinerequire submission of a Personal Statement. When matching offers for interviews, GEMSAS provides an online application and matching system for domesticapplicants to postgraduate medical schools (note: Flinders University utilize their own system). Through the GEMSAS system, applicants can list up to sixpreferences and are ranked on GPA, GAMSAT results, and any other selection criteria such as a portfolio, Casper score, and bonuses. It is this ranked list thatschools use to make offers for interview.   Types of Interviews The Medicine Admissions Interview aims to assess the suitability of the applicant for training i.e., the ability to communicate effectively, act ethically, andpromote health maintenance. All medical schools (barring the University of Sydney) conduct either structured interviews or Multiple Mini Interviews (MMIs).Structured interviews are directed by a panel of interviewers who ask each applicant the same set of questions, whereas MMIs have several stations thatapplicants move around and involves a question or task. Generally, the themes of these interviews centre around:   Personal questions Emotional communication Problem solving Resilience and maturity Enthusiasm for Medicine Awareness of common issues in Medicine Ethics and empathy   All GEMSAS medical schools utilise the MMI format, whereas most undergraduate medical streams tend toward semi-structured interviews. This is in partbecause undergraduate medical schools focus more of their time on personal questions, trying to gauge your desire to study Medicine. Interview scores arestandardized for postgraduate GEMSAS medical schools, only, and can be used by other participating schools in the allocations for offers of places.   Interview performance makes up a significant chunk of your ranking required for medical school offers — most times, it is worth 50% of your final score. YourUCAT or GAMSAT results mean nothing here, which is why you should start preparing for interviews before offers are released, to give you the best chance ofscoring highly. The Institute of Medical Education Medicine Admissions Interview Question Generator provides example themes and interview questions thatare assessed across a diverse number of medical schools. If you have been lucky enough to receive an offer for interview, our Interview Mentorship Programwill give you the best chance at entry.   Offers Traditionally, postgraduate Medicine offers are released in early November for GEMSAS schools and undergraduate offers are made from January (via UAC).GEMSAS and UAC crunch all the numbers and allocate applicants to offers of medical school places according to school selection rules and applicantpreferences. Some offers will be conditional upon the completion of the participant’s current studies and maintenance of their GPA. The types of placesoffered by medical schools include Commonwealth Supported Places, Bonded Medical Places, Medical Rural Bonded Scholarships, and Full-Fee Places. Anoutline of these four place types can be found here. If you were unsuccessful, you will receive notification of this directly. However, should schools have any vacancies, additional offers will be made to selected previously unsuccessful applicants. `)} Arror right

${reading_time(`To secure a place in a medical school requires multiple elements combining in a student's favour. There is the ATAR from secondary school or a GPA scorefrom their undergraduate degree, GAMSAT or UCAT scores, a portfolio (required in a small number of universities), and select universities add bonus pointsfor prior medical professional work and supporting references. Then some consideration must be given to the types and number of places available in eachuniversity. An up-to-date outline of the requirements for undergraduate and graduate.Australian medical school entry can be found on IME Pre-Medical.   The types of places offered by medical schools include Commonwealth Supported Places (CSPs), Bonded Medical Places (BMPs), Medical Rural BondedScholarships (MRBSs), and Full-Fee Places:   Commonwealth Supported Places – these are subsidised by the federal government and are available to domestic students in all undergraduate and some postgraduate courses at public universities. Students who receive a CSP do not pay the full cost of their course; instead, they pay a smaller “student contribution”, with the government paying the difference. Importantly, applicants for CSPs must be citizens (including permanent residents) of Australia and citizens of New Zealand. Bonded Medical Places – BMPs are a type of CSP and students who accept a BMP offer are required by the Australian government to commit to working in a workforce shortage area after gaining fellowship for the length of the medical degree. However, up to half the return of service obligation can be met while completing prevocational training and vocational training. Medical Rural Bonded Scholarship – MRBS places are another type of CSP, and recipients are required to work for six continuous years in a rural or remote area of Australia. MRBSS doctors start their six-year commitment to work in rural Australia after completing their vocational training. Full-Fee Places – these are non-CSPs where the student pays up front for their medical degree. `)} Arror right

Let’s not panic, though; yes, this result might quiteliterally change your life, but it is only the first score of many others like your GPA you must also consider. When you receive your GAMSAT result, it will showan Overall GAMSAT Score and a score for each of the three test sections. Generally, most medical schools rank applicants with this overall score, whereasother universities take an average of the three GAMSAT sections. The universities will set their own cut-off scores from year to year.   GEMSAS and non-GEMSAS Australian medical school minimum GAMSAT score requirements for postgraduate Medicine entry in 2024.   Medical School GAMSAT Score Requirement for Interview/Offer GEMSAS University of Queensland Rank applicants using average of three sections of GAMSAT. A minimum of 50 in each of the three sections is still required Non-GEMSAS Flinders University A minimum Overall Score of 50 with a minimum of 50 in each of the three sections   Keep in mind the section score breakdown is important because different universities place different emphasis on the weighting of Section III. For example, the Universities of Queensland, Melbourne, and Notre Dame take the Mean Average of the individual scores across the three sections. All other universitiesin the GEMSAS Consortium use the Traditional GAMSAT Section Weighting System, which weights Section III twice as much as Section I and Section II. TheUniversity of Sydney ranks applicants based on each Section Score. Each of the four GAMSAT scores is expressed on a scale of 0–100 and are not percentagemarks or the number of questions answered correctly. Since ACER does not provide definitive information on the scoring process, candidates are unable toreplicate the rounding process of their scores.   Example GAMSAT Mean (unweighted) Average and traditional, Weighted Average Section’s I–III calculation methods.      Mean Average of GAMSAT Section’s I, II, and III(All sections weighted equally) Weighted Average of GAMSAT Section’s I, II, and III (Section III is weighted twice as much)   To assist candidates with the evaluation of their test performance, GAMSAT scores are accompanied by a chart showing an approximate percentile rankingfor each Overall Score. This will give you an indication of how well you performed against other candidates in the same GAMSAT sitting. Usually, the averageGAMSAT candidate will achieve an Overall Score somewhere between 55–60. You will notice in the representative figure below that even the slightestincrease in your GAMSAT Overall Score will correspond with a massive boost in your percentile ranking.     Representative figure of GAMSAT Overall Score and Percentile rankings. Small increases in Overall Scores will correspond with improved Percentile rankings.   All medical schools consider your weighted or unweighted Grade Point Average (w-GPA and uw-GPA, respectively) in some form, so it helps to have at least acredit-average to be competitive. Though, each institution varies in the way they consider these scores, and the general rule is that the last three years ofundergraduate academic study are used for the GPA calculation. The most common w-GPA method is shown below:   Final Year results (most recent) = GPA will be weighted by a factor of 3 Final–1 Year results (2nd most recent) = GPA will be weighted by a factor of 2 Final–2 Year results (3rd most recent) = GPA will be weighted by a factor of 1   The formula is expressed as   The “weighted average” is calculated by dividing the sum of the weighted products by 6. This will factor the weightings across the three years of study to give an overall GPA, where an emphasis is placed on the latter years of study. For more information on how other institutions calculate GPA scores, visit theGEMSAS website.   Combined GAMSAT and GPA average method   Medical schools may utilise the combined averages formula to rank candidates for interview, which pools GPA and GAMSAT scores to give an overall score. The formula is expressed as: (GPA score/7 × 100) + GAMSAT Overall Score. The combined score outcome is vital for students to assess their competitiveness,or potential to achieve an offer and secure a place in an Australian medical school. For example, you and your friend both achieved a GAMSAT Overall Scoreof 70 but your GPA was 6.5/7 and your friends was 6.0/7: Your combined average score = (6.5/7 × 100) + 70 = 162.85  Your friend's combined average score = (6.0/7 × 100) + 70 = 155.71   It's critical to note a student's GPA will have a significant impact on their GAMSAT score requirement to be competitive and the amount of preparation work required. If a student has a GPA of 5.5/7.0 versus someone who has 6.8/7.0, they need to outperform them significantly in the GAMSAT exam.   So, what GAMSAT and GPA scores should you aim for to be competitive? Well, the Institute of Medical Education does not have a crystal ball and we cannotmake guarantees. Plus, most medical schools keep these numbers secret (go figure). But from recent candidate feedback, it looks as though a non-ruralGAMSAT score of at least 65 and a GPA of 6.5/7.0 (a combined average of 158) will give you the best chance for an interview offer. Considering GAMSATparticipation numbers increase every year, these figures will most likely climb, reflecting the competitive nature of Medicine entry in the digital age.   Do not panic just yet, these numbers should only be used as a guide. You may be eligible for schemes based on your rurality status, bonuses for prioracademic performance / occupation, and your postgraduate GPA score may also count toward your final calculation at some institutions. At the Institute ofMedical Education, we offer a range of programs, including the GAMSAT Premier Program, that are sure to boost your performance in the GAMSAT andoverall Percentile ranking amongst your peers. ${reading_time(`Becoming a doctor might have been your childhood dream or inspired by a life-changing visit to the emergency room. For some, the title Dr confers a senseof honour, and for others, a stable job with security. No matter your motivation, admission into postgraduate Medicine in Australia, Ireland, and the UKrequires you to sit the Graduate Medical School Admission Test (GAMSAT). Such is the popularity of the GAMSAT, it is now required for entry into certainmedical programs in Israel, Poland, Singapore, and the USA. Offered twice a year in March and September, the GAMSAT is a cognitive test developed by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER). Thosefamiliar with the GAMSAT know it’s a monster of an exam divided into three sections: Section I: Reasoning in Humanities and Social SciencesSection II: Written CommunicationSection III: Reasoning in Biological and Physical Sciences Traditionally, the GAMSAT was facilitated in a paper format; however, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the test had been moved online. The structure andcontent of the GAMSAT exam had changed considerably during the pandemic but such was the age of uncertainty, it could be forgiven. Testing centres arenow more numerous and due to the digital nature of the exam, is accessible right across the world. Fast forward to 2023 and ACER has settled on an all-day5.25-hour exam consisting of 62 questions for Section I, 2-typed exams for Section II, and 75 questions for Section III. You can sample our free trial GAMSAThere and receive the latest updates on the exam (including much more free material!) via our dedicated GAMSAT home. The structure and content of the 2023 GAMSAT exam.   Number ofQuestions Total Test Time Section IReasoning in Humanities and Social Sciences 62  100 minutes Section IIWritten Communication 2 65 minutes Section IIIReasoning in Biological and Physical Sciences 75 150 minutes   You might think sitting the GAMSAT is form of capital punishment, but ACER argues its purpose is to assess your ability to understand and analyse material, and to think critically about issues. Since candidates with non-science backgrounds are eligible to sit the exam, the GAMSAT purposefully tests a wide content base to minimize bias. A recent study commissioned by ACER suggests that students with non-science backgrounds perform better in Section’s I and II than students with science backgrounds. However, candidates with a physical science background tend to perform better overall on the exam.   A science degree is not always a prerequisite and universities encourage applications from people who have achieved academic excellence in other fields.Though, success in GAMSAT will be difficult without a good knowledge and ability in the biological and physical sciences. To be eligible, you need to havecompleted a Bachelor or an undergraduate honours degree or be in your penultimate (second-last) or final year of study, at the time of sitting the test.Fortunately, there is no limit to the number of times you may sit GAMSAT.   Entry into Medicine can be divided into two parts: the application process and the interview process. The process of applying for admission to postgraduateMedicine is separate from the process of registering to sit GAMSAT. There are a total of nineteen postgraduate medical school streams in Australia, twelve ofwhich requiring a GAMSAT score for entry. Ten of these medical schools utilise the Graduate Entry Medical School Admissions System (GEMSAS) to processapplications.   When you receive your GAMSAT results, they will show an Overall GAMSAT Score and a score for each of the three test sections. Generally, most medicalschools rank applicants with this overall score (you must score a minimum of 50 overall, with no individual section below 50), whereas other universities takean average of the three GAMSAT sections. All medical schools consider your weighted or unweighted Grade Point Average (w-GPA and uw-GPA, respectively)in some form, so it helps to have at least a credit-average to be competitive. And to add another layer of complexity, some schools require a portfolio, situational judgement test, and/or personal statement for consideration of an interview offer. Additionally, if you have lived in an Australian rural area, youmay be eligible for consideration in rural schemes. The Australian Government currently defines “rural origin” as residency for at least 10 years cumulativelyor any 5 years consecutively in regional/rural or very remote communities (Modified Monash Model area, MM2–7).   Some exceptions include: The University of Queensland has introduced tertiary level science prerequisites. Entry to Doctor of Dental Surgery and Doctor of Optometry at the University of Melbourne does not require an interview. Entry into Doctor of Medicine and Doctor of Dental Medicine at the University of Sydney does not require an interview. Dubbo stream candidates must submit a Personal Statement for applications to be considered. Selection into the Doctor of Podiatric Medicine at the University of Western Australia is based on academic achievement and specific prerequisites only. The University of Notre Dame Australia (Fremantle and Sydney) rank applicants for interview by the standardised result of GPA, unweighted GAMSAT, Casper score, and bonus points, weighted 30:30:30:10. The University of Wollongong additionally requires the submission of an Admissions Portfolio and a valid Casper score. Macquarie University additionally requires the submission of a Personal Statement.   Not to worry, we have done the hard part for you and summarized the important information for select medical school entries below. More information canalso be found on the official ACER and GEMSAS webpages.   In Australia, your GAMSAT results are valid for four years (or two years when applying at the University of Sydney), i.e., to apply in 2023 for a coursecommencing in 2024, only the following results can be used: September 2019, May 2020, September 2020, March 2021, September 2021, March 2022,September 2022, and March 2023. ${reading_time(`The University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT) ANZ is an admissions test for entry into undergraduate medical, dental, and clinical science degrees in Australiaand New Zealand. The test is used by a consortium of universities as a means of standardising access to their programs. The UCAT is adapted from the UKClinical Aptitude Test (UKCAT) which is used in the United Kingdom for the same purposes as UCAT. For 2019, the UCAT replaced the previously used UMATexam in Australian and New Zealand. Along with the student's grades from secondary school and performance in the medicine entry interview, UCAT is usedto rank students or entry into undergraduate programs. Students sit the UCAT in the same year that they apply to university, which can only be sat once per year. The UCAT ANZ is a multiple-choice exam. It is split into the following sections which aim to assess a range of mental abilities: Verbal Reasoning – evaluate information that is presented in a written form Decision Making – apply logic to reach a decision or conclusion, evaluate arguments, and analyse statistical information Quantitative Reasoning – evaluate information presented in a numerical form Abstract Reasoning – use convergent and divergent thinking to infer relationships from information Situational Judgement – understand real world situations and identify critical factors and appropriate behaviour in dealing with them The UCAT ANZ 2023 will be held in the months of July and August 2023 and can only be sat once by each student during this period. Though there is nospecific curriculum for the UCAT, the innate skills assessed can be developed and improved through quality practice. Students sitting the exam are required tocomplete several questions in each section according to set timings spanning two hours. The structure and content of the 2023 UCAT ANZ exam, with scaled score ranges   UCAT Subtests Questions Score Range Question Marking Test Time Verbal Reasoning 44 300–900 1 mark each question 21 minutes Decision Making 29 300–900 1 mark each question; 2 marks for multiple statement questions 31 minutes Quantitative Reasoning 36 300–900 1 mark each question 25 minutes Abstract Reasoning 50 300–900 1 mark each question 12 minutes Total Score Range 1200–3600 Situational Judgement 69 300–900 Full marks for correct answers; partial marks for response close to correct answer 26 minutes   Candidates sitting the UCAT are scored using a specific system marked on the number of correct answers given, with no negative marking for incorrectanswers. Question sets are randomly generated, and all test forms are scaled so that candidates receive impartiality between subsets. For each section of theexam, each candidate receives a UCAT score of between 300 (minimum) and 900 (maximum). A total scaled score of 1200–3600 is produced by adding the individual scaled cognitive section scores of Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making, Quantitative Reasoning and Abstract Reasoning. Within the SituationalJudgement test, full marks are awarded for a question if your response matches the correct answer and partial marks awarded if your response is close to thecorrect answer. On average, students sitting the UCAT will achieve scores ranging from 500–700 on each of the cognitive sections of the UCAT exam. Finalscores for the exam will be provided to the candidate on the day of the examination. For reference, summary mean UCAT ANZ scores from previous years are shown below. Mean UCAT ANZ scores from 2019–present, with individual scaled scores for each cognitive subtest, total scaled score, and situational judgement subtest. The single most important tip to help you adjust to university life.

The single most important tip to help you adjust to university life.

${reading_time(` The holiday season is officially over, and it has just dawned on you that your university orientation is… *checks timetable* tomorrow?! No need to hit the panic button yet, as this new chapter in your life signals a time of optimism. Whether this is your first, second, or third start to the university year, one piece of advice still holds true: “Comparison is the thief of joy”. Your university experience will vary to that of your peers, even to those with identical class timetables. You will meet people from all walks of life, some with subjectively privileged upbringings and others with the hopes of repaying the sacrifices their family made to give them a better chance at life. Yes, I am generalising here, and this list should be exhaustive (nor are the two examples I provided mutually exclusive); but the truth is, that was my experience. Initially, I found it hard to make friends and keep up with the high demands of the degree. I grew to resent other students who I perceived to have a thriving social life and still score well in assessments, something I was naively conditioned to believe was not possible. I had to keep reminding myself I deserved to be here — I received an offer to study at this university just like everybody else. However, this isn’t one of those sob stories, and I am not asking for your sympathy. What I am inferring is that imposter syndrome is real and it’s OK to not know what you are doing. Luckily, it took me only one semester to snap out of this adverse mindset. Over time, I realised that whilst my experience was seemingly different, most students shared universal issues. Now as an academic myself, I can pass on a few tips that I wish I knew before I started university. It’s OK to not make friends immediately or skip social occasions to study. It’s also OK (with reason) to prioritize social events over study. It’s OK to never understand a subject matter, no matter how hard you try — failing a class is not a unique experience and can happen to anyone. The whole point of university is to find out your strengths and weaknesses, and to exploit this knowledge for your future career in the workforce. Naturally, it’s OK to dislike your assignment group members, some people really are hard to work with. Herein lies the university experience paradox: your experiences are unique to other students but instantaneously similar at the same time. This explains why so many students feel disenfranchised with the whole process. It goes without saying that there is no point in comparing yourself to others. Focus and work on your own strengths and flaws, irrespective of those around you. Your time at university will be some of the best years of your young adult life, so try to make the best of it. Whilst comparison may be the thief of joy: “Pessimism leads to weakness and optimism to power”. Enjoy your upcoming university orientation events and good luck in your studies. Power to you, you have earned it. `)} Arror right
